1) I read that you were inspired by the stories and fairy tales?that you heard?when you were a kid, right??Your pictures look like they were taken from books of fairy tales! Which stories inspired you?1）我知道你們制作這期“童話仙境”的靈感是來自你們小時(shí)候聽來的童話故事是嗎？你們作品里的人物看起來真的就像是從童話故事里走出來的！哪些童話故事給了你們這些靈感？

You were probably reading about my most recent work, which is a project I have been producing over the last 20 months called ‘Wonderland’.
你們也許看了我最近的作品，這些作品所屬的“童話仙境”系列是我花了20個(gè)月構(gòu)思制作出來的。

The series is actually dedicated to my mother who sadly passed away in 2008. She was an English teacher and read to me almost everyday for many years as a child. When she died I wanted to create a collection of extraordinarily beautiful pictures based on the memories of her tales and the imagination she gave me. My focus was to create a ‘storybook without words’, a fairytale world filled with strange unexplained characters, set in magical landscapes – a place for people to let their imagination be carried away.None of the pictures are based on exact stories or people, they are more like a blur of everything I remembered.
這個(gè)系列實(shí)際上是我送給我在08年離世母親的禮物。她是個(gè)英語老師，小時(shí)候她每天都會(huì)給我講童話故事。在她離開之后，我就想以她跟我說的這些童話故事給我?guī)淼拿篮糜洃浐蜕衿婊孟霝榛A(chǔ)創(chuàng)作出一組極致美麗的照片來。我想創(chuàng)作出一部“不用言語講述的”童話故事，這個(gè)故事發(fā)生在一塊充滿魔幻色彩的領(lǐng)域，上面滿是神奇難以解釋的角色——在這塊領(lǐng)域上，人們可以讓自己的想象力盡情發(fā)揮。我的作品里沒有哪一個(gè)是可以說出來是出自哪個(gè)故事里的任務(wù)，她們都是我記憶中的影像。

So you may recognize elements like a girl with long ‘Rapunzel’ hair. There will be landscapes in the pictures such as the giant candy canes in the woods (Wonderland 24), that may remind the viewer of Hansel and Gretel, but nothing is directly copied.
所以你可能會(huì)發(fā)現(xiàn)其中某個(gè)元素像是“長(zhǎng)發(fā)公主”里的。照片里會(huì)出現(xiàn)《漢賽爾與格雷特》中巨大的拐杖糖，但卻不是完全的復(fù)制故事中的樣貌。

2) You began taking photographs since when? As a child did you already have a love for the arts?2）你是從什么時(shí)候開始拍攝這組照片的？?jī)簳r(shí)的你是不是就對(duì)藝術(shù)充滿了無限的熱愛?

I have only been a photographer for 3 years, my main career has always been fashion design. I have been a designer for 10 years, and before that I worked in costume for film and theatre. I’ve always been involved in art, and studied photography many years ago when I was a student.
我是從3年前才開始做攝影師，我主要的工作還是時(shí)尚設(shè)計(jì)。我已經(jīng)做了10年的設(shè)計(jì)師了，之前我曾經(jīng)為電影和戲劇做過戲服。我一直都處在藝術(shù)行業(yè)中，我是從多年前的學(xué)生時(shí)代開始學(xué)習(xí)攝影的。

I make everything you see in my pictures. I create the entire scene, and then record it all with my camera. For this reason the pictures can take a very long time to produce, sometimes a whole month for one photo.

3) I noticed that your photos are also strong in color and contrast. This effect creates a perception of another world is this how you add to the fantasty ?3）我發(fā)現(xiàn)你的照片里充滿了強(qiáng)烈的色彩和對(duì)比。你是不是用這種方式來增強(qiáng)你創(chuàng)造的另一個(gè)世界的神秘感。

Yes colour is very important I take it extremely seriously. A large part of Wonderland is about trying to explain to people that actually we all live in a real Wonderland . I do not invent fantasy landscapes in the computer using Photoshop; all the locations in the pictures are real. The beautiful fields of flowers, the unusual trees, the snow scenes – all of these places exist, its just that we spend too much time staring at the television instead of looking out the window.??
色彩的確很重要，我也用很嚴(yán)肅的態(tài)度來對(duì)待它。我創(chuàng)造這一期的“童話仙境”是想向人們表達(dá)其實(shí)我們也是生活在一個(gè)真實(shí)的童話仙境中。我不會(huì)在電腦上用Photoshop的特效來創(chuàng)造我的幻想天地；照片里的場(chǎng)景都是真正存在的。那些長(zhǎng)滿了花朵、造型奇特的樹木和雪景——這一切都是真實(shí)存在的，只不過我們花了太多時(shí)間去看電視里的它們而不愿意透過我們的窗口親眼去欣賞它們。

?It is important to make the picture feel magical, but I also think there is an important message for us to rediscover our natural world again.
讓照片呈現(xiàn)出魔幻的色彩很重要，但是我認(rèn)為讓我們?cè)诂F(xiàn)實(shí)世界中去再次發(fā)現(xiàn)它們也很重要。

4) What are your favorite characters from the stories?
4）那么這些故事里你最喜歡的是哪一個(gè)？

If you mean who are my favourite characters from the Wonderland series then I think my absolute favourite is ‘The storyteller’ (Wonderland number 29 and 30) The costume was incredibly hard to make, the headdress was made from over a thousand fresh flowers that were picked the night before the shoot.
如果你是問“童話仙境”中我最喜歡的角色的話，那肯定是“吉姆漢森的說書人”。這一款的服裝制作難度很大，頭飾是由上千朵鮮花做成，這個(gè)頭飾是在拍攝前一天花了一整晚做成的。

It was a massive effort to produce that picture and I love it dearly. If your question was regarding ‘real’ storybook characters then I have so many it is difficult to chose.MaybeBaba Yaga, and also the Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen.
要做出一張我非常喜歡的照片來要費(fèi)很大的力氣。如果你的問題是問我故事說中的哪個(gè)“真實(shí)”角色我最喜歡，那我就很難選了。也許是芭芭雅嘎或者是安徒生的白雪公主。

5) Do you have some other work with photos that is not inspired in tales? Or that’s your identity?
5）那么在你的照片里有什么不是出自童話故事的嗎?或者是有你自身特色的東西？

I have lots of work that isn’t inspired by fairytales. Before Wonderland, I took a lot of self-portraits during my mother’s illness when I needed to escape from reality and pretend to have a different, happier life.
有很多。在“童話仙境”之前，在我媽媽生病期間，當(dāng)我需要從現(xiàn)實(shí)中逃離并加裝過著一種另外的更快樂的生活的時(shí)候，于是我拍了很多自拍。

I guess this is where the seed for Wonderland was sown – my need to create an alternative reality to the real life sadness I was dealing with. So there is often a dreamlike state in my earlier work, but Wonderland is where these ideas are pushed into far bigger productions.
我想這也是我打算拍“童話仙境”的種子發(fā)芽的地方——我需要?jiǎng)?chuàng)作出一個(gè)選擇性的現(xiàn)實(shí)世界來逃離現(xiàn)實(shí)帶給我的傷痛。所以在我的早期作品中會(huì)經(jīng)?？吹揭粋€(gè)夢(mèng)想般的國(guó)度，但是“童話仙境”則是我這個(gè)想法擴(kuò)大化的成果。
