膠囊旅館大多只有在繁忙的都市地區(qū)才有，因為日本可怕的加班文化，促使了膠囊旅館的誕生。這種旅館是幾十個整齊撂起來的“膠囊”。每個膠囊“盛放”一個顧客。上海開了中國的第一個膠囊旅館。

?Located near the bustling Shanghai Railway Station, the Xitai Capsule Hotel consists of 68 "capsules".

Each one measures 1.1-meters high, 1.1-meters wide and 2.2-meters long, and is equipped with its own lighting, pillows, bedding, alarm clock, power sockets, LED screen and internet connection.

Ta Zan, the 33-year-old owner of the hotel, explains at the moment they only serve male guests, since the 300-square-meter hotel only has a communal lavatory and shower room.

"In Japan, more than 80% capsule hotels only serve male customers. Those serving both genders are usually with larger areas. If there is sufficient demand in the future, we may consider of opening another capsule hotel serving females only. We may provide woman-targeted services such as Spa, manicure as well as massage."

When you arrive at the reception, the receptionist will ask you if you snore. For the capsules are divided into three zones. Guests who often snore can stay in the same zones so they will feel better knowing that others are not disturbed.

Rates for a capsule are 88 Yuan or $13 USD per day or 28 Yuan flat rate plus 4 Yuan per hour for those who are just stopping in for less than 24 hours.

Although the hotel isn't yet fully operational, the hotel has attracted many curious travellers and Shanghai locals. Most of them consider the price to be too high. Pan Dan is a white-collar worker who often travels to Shanghai.

"To me, it's not very practical, because it's not cheap if you spend a whole night here. Many hotels in Shanghai charge just like 100 Yuan odd for a standard room at low seasons."

But Ta Zan, the owner who used to study in Japan and worked at a Japanese capsule hotel, believes its hotel will curve a niche in Shanghai.

"We're targeting those short-stop travelers who would spend less than 24 hours here. For example if you just arrived at the Shanghai Railway Station in mid-night. You can come to our hotel and spend like 48 Yuan to spend the rest night here. You won't get such a cheap price at other hotels. And I think young travelers will also favor our hotel."

Ta Zan believes the capsule hotel will catch on in China, but, at the moment it still needs time for Chinese people to get used to this new hotel concept.
